World Health Day 2025: health is a fundamental right, not a privilege

Today, on World Health Day, we at AFEW International affirm that health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Yet, in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) region, underserved communities continue to face significant barriers to accessing essential healthcare services.

This year, as we celebrate 25 years of commitment to improving health and human rights, we reflect on the progress we have made and the work that still lies ahead. Since 2001, AFEW International, a Dutch non-governmental humanitarian public health organization, has been dedicated to supporting underserved populations and advocating for health and human rights in the EECA region. We have worked tirelessly to give these communities a strong international voice, focusing on the rights of individuals and their access to essential healthcare. Over the past 25 years, we have seen the power of collaboration, advocacy, and community-driven solutions, but we also know that many challenges remain. Through our work, we continue to strive for a more inclusive, equitable healthcare system that addresses the needs of those most in need, ensuring that no one is left behind.

This World Health Day, we stand in solidarity with all those fighting for health equity in the EECA region and beyond. We call on governments, healthcare providers, and communities to work together to ensure that no one is left behind. Access to healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and together, we can create a healthier, more inclusive future for all.

Yours AFEW International
