On February 13th, AFEW International hosted an online workshop titled ABCD-Introduction for Uzbek CSOs, as part of the project Empowering Voices for Inclusive Development: Strengthening Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Uzbekistan, focusing on women and youth.
The session brought together more than 20 representatives from civil society organizations across the country (Samarkand, Tashkent, Fergana, and also from the neighbouring country Kyrgyz Republic), introducing them to the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach.
What is ABCD?
The ABCD approach is a transformative method in community development that shifts the focus from identifying problems to recognizing and leveraging existing strengths and resources within communities. Rather than concentrating on deficits, this approach encourages organizations and individuals to explore the talents, assets, and opportunities that already exist, using them as catalysts for meaningful change.
Since 2024, AFEW International has been integrating the ABCD approach into its projects in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The approach has already demonstrated success in several countries, where it has empowered communities to take control of their development and maximize their potential. In January 2025 a similar training was organised for community leaders, local activists, and organization representatives from Georgian NGOs.
Workshop highlights
During the interactive session, participants from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were introduced to the fundamental principles of ABCD, including:
- Identifying and utilizing existing assets within their communities
- Engaging local stakeholders in advocacy and decision-making
- Developing strategies for fostering sustainable community engagement
Empowering voices for inclusive development
Since March 2024, AFEW International has been implementing the project “Empowering Voices for Inclusive Development: Strengthening Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Uzbekistan”, focusing on women and youth. The initiative aims to enhance the capacities of 15 local CSOs that provide essential support to people living with HIV (PLHIV) and those affected by HIV, with a specific focus on women and youth.
AFEW International remains committed to strengthening civil society, fostering community-driven solutions, and promoting inclusivity. By equipping local organizations with the ABCD methodology, we aim to create sustainable, community-led development that uplifts underserved groups and amplifies their voices in decision-making processes.
As the project progresses, we will continue providing our partners capacity-building support, training sessions, and networking opportunities. Through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a focus on existing community strengths, we will work towards building a more resilient and inclusive civil society in Uzbekistan and beyond.
Stay tuned for more updates on our initiatives and the inspiring impact of ABCD-driven activities!
