Together for Health. Stand with Science

As we observe World Health Day on April 7th, AFEW International proudly joins the global community under the 2026 theme, “Together for Health. Stand with Science.” This theme highlights the power of collective action and evidence-based approaches in ensuring better health outcomes for all.

In Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA), this message is especially urgent. Many underserved communities continue to face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, not only due to structural inequalities but also because of stigma, discrimination, and misinformation. Groups such as LGBTIQ individuals, men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, sex workers, people living with HIV, (ex) prisoners, (labour) migrants, vulnerable women, youth, and adolescents are disproportionately affected by health disparities.

Standing with science means committing to proven, inclusive, and rights-based health interventions. It means ensuring that policies and programs are guided by evidence, and that no one is left behind due to prejudice or lack of access.

AFEW International remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing health as a shared responsibility. We believe that improving public health requires collaboration—between communities, healthcare providers, policymakers, and international partners—grounded in scientific knowledge and mutual respect. Access to quality healthcare services, including prevention, treatment, and care for major public health concerns such as HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, and viral hepatitis, must be guaranteed for all.

On this World Health Day, we reaffirm our dedication to working together for healthier communities. Through advocacy, education, and strong partnerships, we will continue to promote inclusive, people-centered approaches and support underserved populations in achieving better health and well-being.
