World AIDS Day 2025

On 1 December 2025, AFEW International joins the global community in commemorating World AIDS Day, this year under the theme: “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response”.

The HIV response stands at a crossroads: life-saving services are being disrupted, and communities face heightened vulnerabilities. Yet amid these challenges, hope endures—driven by the resilience, determination, and innovation of communities striving to end AIDS.

In the Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) region, the HIV epidemic continues to pose significant public health challenges. According to 2024 data, HIV prevalence among key populations remains alarmingly high, with many individuals experiencing compounded vulnerabilities due to poverty, stigma, and social exclusion. Underserved communities face substantial barriers to essential health and social services, while the burden of HIV, TB, and hepatitis C remains disproportionately high.

Since 2001, AFEW International has been steadfastly committed to supporting all people in the EECA region who face obstacles in accessing health, justice, and social participation. Guided by the principles of human rights and community engagement, we advocate for the rights of key populations, develop participatory approaches with communities, counter stigma surrounding HIV, TB, and hepatitis, create supportive environments for those most affected, and bridge West and East by facilitating collaboration among governments, civil society, scientists, and healthcare providers.

On this World AIDS Day, AFEW International reaffirms its commitment to standing with communities, advancing human rights, and transforming the AIDS response in EECA. Together, through sustained political leadership, international cooperation, and community-driven solutions, we can overcome disruption and move closer to ending AIDS by 2030.
