Today marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global movement held each year from 25 November to 10 December. In 2025, the campaign highlights a growing and urgent issue under the theme: “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.”
Violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world. One in three women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. This is not only a statistic—it is a global emergency that demands immediate attention and action.
This year’s campaign carries special significance. As the world marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, one of the most visionary international agreements on women’s rights, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE 2025 campaign turns the spotlight on digital forms of violence. Online harassment, cyberstalking, the non-consensual sharing of images, and technology-facilitated abuse have become widespread, affecting millions of women and girls across generations and regions.
The campaign serves as a reminder that digital safety is essential to achieving gender equality. Technology should be a space for empowerment—not a tool for harm.
What are the 16 days of activism?
Launched in 1991, the 16 Days of Activism campaign has grown into a worldwide movement. Governments, NGOs, activists, communities, and individuals come together to:
- Raise awareness of gender-based violence
- Support survivors
- Advocate for stronger laws and policies
- Promote education and prevention
- Inspire community engagement and social change
Across the world, people organize events, marches, discussions, workshops, art projects, online campaigns, and advocacy actions—all aimed at confronting and ending violence against women and girls.
AFEW International joins the global movement
AFEW International is proud to stand with the international community in marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. From November 25—International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women—until December 10—Human Rights Day, we call on everyone to take action, raise awareness, and inspire women to claim their rights and their freedom from violence. In 2025, AFEW International is focusing its efforts on highlighting the experiences and needs of women in Uzbekistan. Throughout the 16 days, we will share:
- Inspirational stories and messages
- Practical information
- Tools to help women prevent, resist, and overcome all forms of gender-based violence
Our goal is to support women in Uzbekistan to empowering their voices, protect their wellbeing, and pursue their happiness and rights without fear.
