On 19 June 2025, Yulia Komo (Programmes Eastern Europe and Public Affairs) and Petra Kuipers (Programmes Central Asia) attended, on behalf of AFEW International, the event “Supporting Civil Societies in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood” at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union in Brussels.
The event brought together civil society organisations, EU institutions, Member States, and international partners to share ideas and experiences on strengthening civil society across the region, promoting active and inclusive civic spaces, responding to current challenges, and building stronger partnerships. Discussions highlighted the key role civil society plays in democratic reform, recovery, and resilience.

Civil society in the region is currently facing many challenges, and there is room for EU support to become more effective, coordinated, and responsive to local needs. Most importantly, the focus must be on finding practical strategies to build civic resilience and strengthen cooperation between civil society and institutions.
We extend our sincere thanks to the European Commission, both as organiser and donor, for their continued commitment to supporting civil society, promoting democracy, upholding the rule of law, and protecting human rights throughout the Eastern Neighbourhood and beyond. AFEW International remains committed to supporting strong, inclusive, and resilient civil societies across the Eastern Neighbourhood.
