A new approach to inspire community action

On January 16, 2025, community leaders, local activists, and organization representatives from Georgian NGOs joined an online workshop to explore the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The session was part of the broader “Rights and Resilience: Empowering Georgia’s Community for Inclusive Change” project led by AFEW International and its partners – Equality Movement and Tanadgoma with the support of EU Delegation Georgia.

What’s ABCD all about?

The ABCD method takes a unique approach to community development by focusing on existing assets rather than deficits. It encourages organizations and individuals to identify the resources, talents, and opportunities within their communities to drive change.

Since 2024, AFEW International has been using the ABCD approach in its projects in Eastern Europe and Central Asia countries. It has already been successfully applied in some of the countries in the region, where it proved effective in helping communities take ownership of their development and make the most of their local resources.

During the online workshop, representatives of AFEW International introduced participants to key aspects of the ABCD approach and philosophy. The session also emphasized the role participants would play in identifying and involving future project facilitators and beneficiaries from across Georgia.

The bigger picture

Since 2024, AFEW International has been implementing a similar process in Uzbekistan. Insights and lessons from each country will be actively shared and exchanged, fostering mutual growth and collaboration. AFEW remains committed to empowering local organizations and communities to take action, paving the way for a stronger and more inclusive future in the respective countries.
