Launching AFEW

A prelude to the launch of AFEW was given in June 2001, with a photograph exhibition in the Andrei Sacharov Museum in Moscow. This exhibition marked the five-year anniversary of MSF-H's work in the field of HIV/AIDS in the RF, and the hand over of its activities to AFEW. The launch was opened by His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange of The Netherlands.

The official launch of the organisation took place on 1 December - World AIDS Day - 2001. For this occasion, AFEW organised press conferences in Moscow, Kyiv and Almaty, and photo exhibitions together with MSF-H in Ukraine and The Netherlands. AFEW's website has been up and running since the organisation was officially launched.

World AIDS Day 2002

World AIDS Day is a time to celebrate the gains made in treating and preventing HIV/AIDS, as well as protecting the human rights of those living with the virus. It is also a moment to commemorate the lives lost and to learn from our past failings. For AFEW, it is a time for actively raising awareness among the general public via press conferences and youth concerts, and through interviews with the national and international media.

Photographers' file

AFEW started to build a photographic archive which includes photographs from Ilse Frech (The Netherlands), David Gillanders (the United Kingdom), Thomas Peter (the United Kingdom/Germany) and John Ranard (USA). These photographers have donated their photographs to AFEW for use in the development of training and public relations materials.
